Sharjah 24 – WAM: The Khalifa Student Empowerment Programme, Aqdar, has held a meeting in Dubai to co-ordinate celebrations of the Safer Internet Day, or SID, in the UAE, to reflect the country’s contribution towards global efforts to increase online safety for internet users worldwide.
Last year, the UAE joined more than 100 countries worldwide, including all 28 countries of the European Union, in celebrating Safer Internet Day, held in February every year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people across the world.
Selecting Aqdar as the official co-ordinator of the celebrations in the UAE is a source of pride and inspiration for its workers, said General Co-ordinator of the programme, Colonel Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Jassim Al Dabal, while chairing the meeting.
Achievements made by the programme last year and proposals to set up committees for this year’s celebrations were discussed at the meeting.
Celebrations of the event in the UAE are held under the patronage of Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.
Started as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004, and taken up by the Insafe network of awareness centres as one of its earliest actions in 2005, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone and is now celebrated across all continents.
Safer Internet Day seeks to raise awareness of emerging online issues and chooses a topic reflecting current concerns. For SID 2016, the focus of the day was “Play your part for a better internet”, reflecting the fact that we all have a role to play.
